EU Bans British Meat, Milk Exports Source: Associated Press Publication date: 2001-02-21 BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Union on Wednesday banned Britain from exporting meat, livestock and milk to the rest of the EU until March 1 following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease among pigs in England. ``The decision will apply immediately and shall be reviewed at the meeting of the Standing Veterinary Committee scheduled for the 27 February 2001,'' the EU's head office said in a statement. Foot and mouth disease was discovered Monday in 27 pigs at a slaughterhouse at Little Warley, Essex, east of London. The British Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food said the disease, which is airborne and highly infectious, had spread to a neighboring farm. The British Food Standards Agency said the cases had no implications for the human food chain. The Associated Press News Service Copyright 2000 by The Associated Press All Rights Reserved
