Co-Op halts sales of GM-reared pork August 11, 2001 11:17am Source: Newsletter, August 11, 2001 JO WILLEY, CONSUMER AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT, PA NEWS Supermarket chain Co-op yesterday announced it will not stock fresh pork reared on genetically modified feed. This latest move comes amid continuing consumer unease about so-called frankenstein foods. The Co-operative Group said its own-label fresh pork has been added to a growing list of meat and poultry available from animals fed on non-GM feed. GM ingredients are already excluded from all Co-op labelled products, but the chain is trying to work with suppliers to eliminate GM ingredients from animal feed, a spokeswoman said. The fresh pork will be clearly labelled in-store telling consumers it was reared on non-GM feed. The announcement was welcomed by Friends of the Earth GM campaigners. Carol Kearney said: "We welcome this further extension of choice for consumers to help them avoid GM food if they want to. This is a growing trend in the food retailing industry and we very much hope that this will give further signals to the other retailers to speed up their efforts to go GM-feed free or to declare their intention to do so.
