M&S FISH ON GM-FREE DIET March 28, 2000 PA News By Rachael Crofts, Consumer Affairs Correspondent, PA News Marks & Spencer today announced plans to remove GM soya and maize from its fish feed for salmon and other farmed fish. From May 1 all M&S fish will be fed a non-GM diet, including that used in sandwiches, recipe dishes and canned products. The company has worked with the world's largest feed companies, Trouw Aquaculture(cor) and Biomar to develop the feed. David Gregory, head of food technology for M&S, said: "Because of our unique position - we only sell our own brand - we are able to control the food chain right from the farm to the kitchen table. "We have been working closely with all our suppliers including feed companies, farmers and fish processors to create the first certified non GM diet for farmed fish. "We are determined to respond to our customers' demand for choice whilst they have concerns about GM. "This builds on our leading position regarding GM in food and animal feed."
