Page 26: "Shareholder Proposal No. 2 Lenore Goldman, c/o Harrington Investments, Inc, Napa, CA owning xxxx shares of the company has given notice that she intends to present for action at the annual meeting the following resolution: Whereas: International markets for GE foods are threatened by extensive resistance; *Several of Europe's largest food retailers, including Tesco, Sainsbury Group, Carrefour, and Rewe, have committed to removing GE ingredients from their store brand products, as have US retailers Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats Markets; * In the UK, 3 fast food giants - McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC- are eliminating GE soya and corn ingredients from their menus; *McCain Foods of Canada, the largest potato and frozen french fry processor in the world, announced they would no longer accept Bt potatoes for their brand name products (11/99); *Gerber Products Co announced in July 99 that they would not allow GE corn or soy in any of their baby foods; * Frito Lay, a division of PepsiCo, asked its farmers from whom it purchases corn for its chips to provide only non GE corn (Jan, 2000); *Once in effect, the Biosafety Protocol, approved by representatives of more that 130 countries (Jan, 2000), will require that GEOs intended for food, feed and processing must be labeled "May contain" GEOs and countries can decide whether to import those commodities based on a scientific risk assessment. There is scientific concern that GE agricultural products may be harmful to humans, animals, or the environment; * The USDA has acknowledged (7/13/99) the need to develop a comprehensive approach to evaluating longterm and secondary effects of GE products; * Some GE crops have been engineered to have higher levels of toxins, such as Bt, to make them insect resistant; * In 1998, research showed that Bt crops are building up Bt toxins in the soil, thereby harming soil ecology and beneficial organisms and insects; * In 1999, the EU proposed the suspension of approval of new GEOs until a new safety law for GEOs is implemented in 2002. This followed a new study that showed Bt corn pollen may harm monarch butterflies. In the US, we have a long tradition of citizens' "Right to Know"; and expression of this includes the current laws requiring nutritional labeling of foods; * A Jan, 99 Time/CNN poll indicated that 81% of Americans said that GE food should be labeled as such; * GE crops may incorporate genes from animal species. Individuals cannot avoid them for religious or ethical reasons unless they are labeled; * The EU requires labeling of GE foods, and labeling has been proposed by governmental authorities in Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. Resolved: Shareholder request the Board of Directors to adopt a policy of removing GE crops, organisms, or products thereof from all products sold or manufactured by the company, where feasible, until long-term safety testing has shown that they are not harmful to humans, animals, and the environment; with the interim step of labeling and identifying these products that may contain these ingredients, and reporting to the shareholder by Aug, 2001." then, as it it written: "The Board of Directors recommends a vote AGAINST this resolution."
