The exhibition of Kenneth Patchen's Poem Paintings at the Poetry Library from 19 May to 30 June will be the first time Patchen's work is given exposure in this country. Patchen, who died in 1972, was a major innovator in the poetry/jazz movement of the 1950's and published over 40 books of poetry and prose during his lifetime. He has been championed by writers and poets such as Henry Miller, T S Eliot, E E Cummings and W H Auden, as well as by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael Horovitz and Adrian Mitchell. In addition to his pioneering work in the poetry/jazz movement, he created the forms of the Picture Poem and Painted Book. This exhibition of his Picture Poems, created in the 1960's, is now being made available to the British public for the first time.
