M-Mail FAQ

Q. What is M-Mail?
A. M-Mail is a service from Connectotel allowing any GSM/SMS mobile phone user to send e-mail to any Internet e-mail user.

Q. What is SMS?
A. SMS is the Short Message Service, provided on most GSM mobile phones. It allows the sending of short messages from any GSM mobile phone to any other GSM mobile phone.

Q. How do I send an e-mail?
A. An e-mail should be composed on your mobile phone using SMS message function of your mobile phone. Enter the e-mail address of the message recipient, followed by the text of the message you wish to send. For example, to send a message to user@companyname.com, you can enter :

USER@COMPANYNAME.COM I WILL MEET YOU AT 6PM
When asked for the number to which you wish to send the message, choose the entry for M-Mail from your Phone Address book, or enter +447747782320

Q. How can register to use this service?
A. Please register so that you can use the extended features of the M-Mail service.

Q. What are the benefits of registering?
Registered users can benefit from extended features of M-Mail including: Reply path, Signature, Aliases, Memo and SMSstore features.

Q. How do I set up an entry for M-Mail in my Phone Address book?
A. See the documentation provided with your phone for information about how to set up an entry in your Phone Address book. The number for the M-Mail service is +447747782320. Note, this is a GSM/SMS number and not a voice number, modem number or SMS service centre.

Q. How do I enter a + sign on my mobile phone ?
A. The + sign is often entered by pressing the * key twice. If this does not work on your mobile phone, please consult the phone documentation for details.

Q. How do I enter a 'space' on my mobile phone ?
A. Please consult the documentation for your phone for information on the 'space' and other phone keyboard characters.

Q. How long may my e-mail message be?
A. Your message, including the e-mail address, may be up to 160 characters in length. Many phones will show you how many characters you have typed or how many characters you still have remaining in your message, whilst you are entering the message.

Q. When should I expect the message to arrive?
A. The message should arrive at its destination within a few minutes of you sending from your mobile phone.

Q. Can I reply to messages sent via this service?
A. Yes - a reply path (via e-mail) is provided for messages sent using this service. In order to use the reply path you must register as a user. Replies are sent to your e-mail address and not to your mobile phone.

Q. How can I change the e-mail address or telephone number registered with this service?
A. Please log in so that you can change your details.

Q. Can I set a signature for the messages which come from my phone?
A. Yes - Please register as a user, so that your messages have their own signature.

Q. Can I set the 'subject' for messages sent from my phone?
A. Normally the subject for messages sent from your phone will be :

Message from +1234567890 User name
If you wish to set the subject for a message, use the following format for the message:
e-mailaddress (subject) message
Q. Can I set up aliases for commonly-used e-mail addresses?
A. Yes - Registered users can make use of aliases for commonly-used e-mail addresses. To set up an aliases, please send an SMS message as follows to the M-Mail SMS number :
ALIAS! shortname e-mailaddress
For example :
ALIAS! john johndoe@somewhere.com
To use the alias, just use the alias name, instead of an e-mail address, when composing your SMS message. For example :
JOHN THIS IS A TEST MESSAGE

Q. What is the M-Mail Memo feature?
A. Ever been on the road and wanted to be able to send yourself a quick reminder note, without using your computer?

The M-Mail service now includes a text message "memo" facility for registered users... To send yourself a memo just compose an SMS text message as:

MEMO message
For example:
MEMO Remember to do backups this evening
Then send the message to the standard M-Mail number: +447747782320

The M-Mail service will look up your registered e-mail address and forward the memo message to that address.

Q. What is the M-Mail SMSstore facility?
A. All mobile phones are limited in the number of SMS messages which can be stored. Many will allow only 10 to be stored. So, Connectotel provides registered users with a way to store SMS messages online.

To store an SMS message in your SMSstore, edit the message on your phone so that it begins with the word STORE
STORE message
For example:
STORE This is a message which will be stored
Then send the message to the standard M-Mail number: +447747782320

The M-Mail service will store the SMS message in your SMSstore area. To access your SMSstore area, please log in.

Q. What is the cost of using the M-Mail service?
A. M-Mail uses the standard SMS service provided on your GSM mobile phone. Please ask your telephone provider for details of costs for using SMS messaging. Most providers charge around $0.15 US (around 0.10 UK pounds) per message for sending SMS messages. Note that some Pay As You Talk (PAYT) accounts do not allow sending of SMS messages.

Q. How does this service work?
A. This service operates using hardware and software, developed by Connectotel, which provides a gateway between the world of GSM SMS and the world of Internet E-mail.

A. M-Mail is powered by Connectotel's SMSGateWay Duplex solution. Please contact Connectotel for details of how to implement this service within your own organisation.
